Yes, there does come a time when the DIET in the title needs to be addressed. In order to quick start my summer healthy eating plan, I went on a 3-day juice cleanse, using the Life Juice brand. It was so easy -- I placed the order (must be given at least three days before delivery) and set a date to start the cleanse. Because the juice is fresh it must be consumed within 7 days, so you can't buy it and have it sitting around in your cupboard for a month, which is motivational to get started.
My package arrived on Friday -- complete with a mylar-lined bag and ice packs to keep it cold. It even came with a portable bag to transport a couple of bottles of juice during the day. I loved the convenience!
Each day had a series of 6 bottles of juice, which had to be consumed in order. To be honest, I wasn't sure I was going to like the flavors. I sort of thought of this as medicinal, not as something I would actually like, but I was pleasantly surprised.
Each day started with a bottle of water and himalayan sea salt, with a touch of lemon. The directions said I could either warm it up, or drink it cold. I stuck with cold each day. It didn't taste salty -- I could mostly just taste the lemon. It was rather pleasant to start the morning that way. On the third day I took it with me to drink during my spinning class. It was a change of pace (no pun intended!) from simply downing plain water.
The second juice of the day is called "Positive Balance" and it is supposed to restore your PH, and fill you full of antioxidants. The label says it's a combination of greens (spinach, kale, parsley, cucumber, celery), beets, apples, carrots, ginger and lemon. I liked throwing this one in the freezer for an hour so it was super-cold as well as a little slushy. The apples and ginger made it a little sweet and I liked the combination of flavors.
Juice 3 & 5 are the same -- "Oh My Greens" -- and are consumed mid-morning and mid-afternoon. Also full of vitamins and anti-oxidants, which mostly the same ingredients as "Positive Balance" but without the beets. The apple and ginger also make this a little sweet, with a kick.
Juice 4 is "Bodacious Bunny" which is bright orange and is primarily mostly carrot juice. I'm not a big fan of carrot juice, so I stuck it in the freezer so it became slushy and it was great.
Juice 6 is a nice change for the day -- a calming drink of almonds and dates flavored with cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg. I followed the directions and warmed this up a bit and drank it before bedtime. It was relaxing as well as delicious.
I found that I wasn't hungry at all as long as I drank a juice every three hours. In between, I had hot teas and lots of water.
After three days I felt great -- my skin felt good, I lost five pounds, and I actually started craving juices and smoothies. My Vitamix blender is getting its own workout now, as I try out different recipes. This morning I even through in a handful of kale in my berry smoothie. Baby steps, I know, but not a bad thing in the long run.
Hmmm, maybe I'll do the 5-day version of the juice cleanse next time!
Here's to greens!
