I went to a wonderful dinner party last night at Quality Meats -- and "Quality" is the appropriate word here. We had a group of eight people and we were in the balcony area, where it was semi-private. I felt like I was at a high school dance, though. We were evenly split between men and women, and we ended up with all the women on one side of the table and all the men on the other. What's that about? And all the men ordered fish and the women ordered steak -- so maybe we weren't in high school and the women weren't pretending not to be hungry in order to impress their dates! Maybe it was more like Mars vs. Venus. Anyway, more about the restaurant.
I don't even know where to begin -- the food was really terrific. But note, dear reader, that this is a restaurant where everything is oversized -- from the wine glasses to the portion sizes -- so be prepared! You'll want to go with a large group (keeping with the oversized theme here) so you can order lots of side dishes to share.
Before we ordered we were served a lovely plate of red and yellow watermelon, which was a very refreshing palate cleanser. After that, a pan of piping hot dinner rolls arrived, the kind that your great aunt Betsy makes for Thanksgiving dinner. (One of the women at the table asked for a copy of the recipe so she could make them for her own Thanksgiving, and the waiter miraculously appeared with a hand-written recipe a few , which our waiter got from the kitchen and handed over -- talk about amazing service!)
For appetizers, my table had a wide variety. A couple of guests opted for the shrimp cocktail, which came with three different dipping sauces. The sashimi appetizer was also very popular. I had a wonderful beet salad with a little mache salad -- I refrained from licking the sauce off the plate, but it was close.
Main courses were varied -- there were several fish options ordered, a couple of filet mignons, and I had a three-filet sampler, and each piece had a different sauce.
If you're game for it, go and just eat the sides! Our sides included edamame with mint, a corn brulee, twice-baked potatoes, steamed spinach, brocoli-cheese puff that even your kids would eat!
Make sure you save room for dessert! For something on the lighter side, the coconut/lime sorbet is very refreshing, but there are also wonderful "ice cream cakes" -- including a cookie monster one that is really fun, and a "Coffee and Donut" one that is chocolate ice cream topped with a mocha-dipped donut. There are also some fun lemonades, and even a selection of after-dinner beers.
There were some many wonderful foods that I didn't event try,a nd I can't wait to go back. I promise that once you've been here, you'll want to return to eat some things again, and try new ones.
PS: We also had a celebrity sighting -- Jessica Simpson came in to the restaurant just as we were leaving. We all refrained from getting phots and autographs, but I can't resist sharing our sighting!
This just in: paparrazzi found Jessica:
